In 1935, the Eschers relocated from southern Italy to Switzerland to escape the rising influence of Mussolini. Finding Switzerland to be more expensive, plus the snow and colder climate in winter than in Italy, Escher was less than enthusiastic about his new accommodations. Perhaps this may explain why, during a particularly fallow period, creatively-speaking, he rendered this painstaking lithograph of a detail of the Hieronymous Bosch piece, The Garden Of Earthly Delights, which he entitled "Hell".
