The reflecting sphere, once popular for use with bird baths in gardens, is one of the focal points of this still life. The other is an statue of a Persian bird-man made of iron, which Escher had in his studio. The bird-man is mirrored in the sphere as is Escher himself, sitting in his studio drawing the image we see on a lithographic stone.
