With subtle humor and meticulous technique, Maurits Cornelis Escher (Dutch, 1898–1972) linked the surreal and the scientific with his strangely logical manipulations of space, dimension, and perspective. Through an artistic sleight of hand, he created works in which up and down have no meaning and seemingly inert patterns metamorphose into living creatures. Escher’s ingenious designs reflect a reverence for the order and beauty of the universe even as they mock humanity’s rigid structuring of reality. His art has intrigued scientists and mathematicians, delighted critics, and attracted a large and loyal following.
In the works of M. C. Escher, a fish may mutate into a goose, stairs may climb at angles denounced by gravity, water may run uphill, but the clean, rational lines of these prints achieve a logic beyond logic. This engagement calendar presents thirty-two of Escher’s wild perspectives and hypnotic, rigorously logical pieces. Also included are a brief essay about the artist, double-page 2010 and 2011 yearly grids, fifty-four weekly grids, twelve full-page monthly grids, lists of international holidays and calling codes / time differences, pages for notes, and a personal information page.
Size: 6 5/8 x 8 in.; 112 pages; hardcover Wire-O bound.
