With subtle humor and meticulous technique, Maurits Cornelis Escher (Dutch, 1898–1972) linked the surreal and the scientific with his strangely logical manipulations of space, dimension, and perspective. Through an artistic sleight of hand, he created works in which up and down have no meaning and seemingly inert patterns metamorphose into living creatures. Escher’s ingenious designs reflect a reverence for the order and beauty of the universe even as they mock humanity’s rigid structuring of reality.
